The leaves fell; the mud froze. The Waldmeistej had frequently promised totake me for a short days shooting in some woodsa few miles down the Danube, when the roadsbecame hard. One morning, in a slight snowstorm,which, however, soon cleared away, we started. Anephew of the TTaldmeister, a medical student,was on the box by the coachman; the Waldmeisterand I seated ourselves behind them, half buried inrugs and furs, and then the jolting began, the mostexcruciating jolting, six or eight miles of it, untilwe reached the great dyke along the river. Onthe way 1 admired the rich red wine colour ofdeep festoons of paprika pods which hung beneaththe thatched roofs of each white farmhouse. The dyke is usually blocked, at intervals, bypadlocked bars which can be opened like gates by THE COxNFIRMATION WREATH

We had still many miles to travel, and had gonetwo or three, when round a bend in the dyke,which farther on was hidden by enormous trees,we saw coming towards us two waggons laden highwith maize-stalks. There was no room to pass ; toturn was impossible. On one side the bank slopedsteeply down for twenty feet; on the other, towardsthe river, a small extra dyke, four feet high and twofeet broad at the top, had been added. What wasto be done ? I could see no way out of the diffi-culty ; but our chief was a man of resource, andthough at first somewhat nonplussed, he speedilyhit on the only possible plan.
