The leaves fell; the mud froze. The Waldmeistej had frequently promised totake me for a short days shooting in some woodsa few miles down the Danube, when the roadsbecame hard. One morning, in a slight snowstorm,which, however, soon cleared away, we started. Anephew of the TTaldmeister, a medical student,was on the box by the coachman; the Waldmeisterand I seated ourselves behind them, half buried inrugs and furs, and then the jolting began, the mostexcruciating jolting, six or eight miles of it, untilwe reached the great dyke along the river. Onthe way 1 admired the rich red wine colour ofdeep festoons of paprika pods which hung beneaththe thatched roofs of each white farmhouse. There was no room to pass ; toturn was impossible.
